Serving Canines & Humans Alike,
1 Hero & 1 Dog at a Time
Our Mission:
"Support and empower disabled veterans and first responders through canine-assisted therapy and other healing strategies"
Who We Are
RRUFF Healing Heroes is a Northern California nonprofit dedicated to supporting Disabled American Veterans and First Responders living with PTSD and other invisible disabilities.
Our goals are simple: to restore hope, confidence, and independence through the healing power of trained service dogs, facility dogs, and therapeutic mental health programs — One Hero and One Dog at a Time.
What We Do
Service Dog Training for Disabled American Veterans & First Responders
Our primary program funds service dog training for heroes living with PTSD and other invisible disabilities
A highly trained service dog is more than a companion — they provide:
- Deep pressure therapy to calm panic and anxiety
- Interrupting nightmares and flashbacks
- Creating safe physical space in crowds
- Alerting to increased stress levels
- Fetching medication
- Guiding their handler out of triggering situations
- Providing daily support that restores independence
All dogs in training complete an intensive 12–18 month training curriculum through trusted local training partners. Each team receives the skills, support, and care they need to rebuild their lives together.
Facility Dog Training for First Responders
First Responders operate in high-stress, high-trauma environments every day. The constant state of alert can take a heavy toll — influencing mental health, relationships, and family life.
To support them where the need is greatest, RRUFF Healing Heroes funds the cost of training for Facility Dogs in police and Fire stations throughout the Greater Sacramento Region.
These dogs:
- Provide emotional support to crews after difficult calls
- Reduce stress and anxiety during long shifts
- Strengthen team morale and camaraderie
- Offer grounding and comfort in emergency environments
Facility Dogs serve the entire department while on duty — a powerful, innovative way to support those who serve our communities.
Mental Health Support for Veterans & First Responders
Healing doesn’t happen alone.
RRUFF Healing Heroes proudly sponsors Mental Health Programs through our affiliated partners — fostering a therapeutic, community-building initiative for veterans and first responders living with PTSD.
Through our resources, participants engage in healing retreats and restorative peer experiences such as:
- Fishing trips
- Golf and outdoor adventures
- Group activities that build trust, strength, and camaraderie
These experiences offer space for connection, grounding, and renewed purpose — surrounded by others who truly understand their journey.
Our Commitment
Across every program, our goal remains the same: To provide life-changing support to those who have sacrificed so much for us, and to ensure they never walk their healing journey alone.

Final Tour of Duty - February 26, 2020
Captain Morgan, “Cappy” crossed over the Rainbow Bridge February 26 in the loving arms of his Veteran, Mike Chinnock, and Jean McGinnis. Cappy retired in 2018 and lived lovingly with Jean in retirement. Cappy was born November 29, 2008.
Not only did Cappy work for his Veteran, Mike, he helped RRUFF Healing Heroes fundraising efforts to provide service dogs and training for other disabled veterans. He never said “no”. His age and his hard work eventually took its toll. There has never been a better, more loving dog.
Rest In Peace Captain Morgan – Your final tour of duty has ended. We will wrap our treasured memories in a blanket of love and keep them for you until we meet again
